Mankato Marathon a Success, 2,000-plus Runners Register

First Mankato Marathon Represents Final Qualifier for Boston Marathon

Mankato, Minn–The first annual Mankato Marathon, the final qualifying event for the famed Boston Marathon , will be even bigger next year, say marathon organizers.

The inaugural race will feature as many as 2,000 participants, while bringing an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 tourists to Mankato Oct. 23, says Anna Thill, president of the Greater Mankato Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The 2010 racer registration was capped at 2,000 runners, leaving later entries disappointed.

“For a first-year marathon, [2,000 runners] is fantastic,” says Jennifer Rath, marketing director for the CVB. “We decided early on to cap it, and some people were upset because they couldn’t run.”

Mankato Community Ready for Marathon Weekend

The first Mankato Marathon will be an exciting day for members of the Mankato community. Many individuals and businesses are preparing for the event.

A community-wide pasta feed will be held the night preceding the marathon.  Runners looking to carbo-load before the race will have their choice of spaghetti or chicken alfredo at WowZone Family Entertainment Center, one of the 14 Mankato restaurants participating in the feed.

The Mankato Marathon has increased interest in running, according to YMCA Fitness Director, Joy Leafblad.

“They’ve gone from zero to marathon and it’s amazing,” says Leafblad. “A lot of our members are starting to run.  It’s been a real exciting year just to see how many people are giving it a try.”

Rath has encouraged Mankato citizens to make their own preparations for the race.  She hopes spectators and residents along the marathon route will hold up signs, cheer for runners or even provide entertainment.

“Be a part of it,” she says. “It will be a lot of fun.”
